Norfolk Island – One of Australia’s best kept secrets!

Posted on Posted in Uncategorized

A lush green space in the South Pacific, Norfolk Island is Australia’s newest Territory and Australia’s best kept secret.

I visited the island in early May, exploring what Norfolk Island has to offer. And let me tell you this place is amazing and absolutely not just for the oldies.

The moment you step down, you can sense this lovely place is very unique. Just a short drive from the airport will take you to Kingston, a colonial gem linked with early convict settlement and later with the descendants of Fletcher Christian, and other mutiny on the Bounty rebels who, along with their Tahitian wives, had outgrown Pitcairn Island.

The people take great pride in Norfolk Island for thinking differently and being a bit quirky, like in their phonebook you may hear regular names like Smith, Bligh or Christian but then you can find someone by their nick name with a number like toyboy, pushy, knuckles or fishy…

The road rules here are so relaxed, everywhere you drive you are expected to waive to everyone you pass, there are no traffic lights just one roundabout and speed limited is 30km per hour. There is only one traffic jam which is caused by the cows and chooks who legally have the right of way.

The people here are very self-sufficient. They grow their own fruit and veggies, and catch their own fish. So, the food on the island is always fresh and delicious. I met Emily Ryves who lives on the island with her husband, beautiful son Charlie and her baby goats. Emily has her own business offering you a real Norfolk Island experience; a day trip at her farm where you will get a chance to meet the friendly goats, take selfies with the goats and sample yummy freshly made goat cheese over stunning views across the ocean.

Only 8 km long and 5 km wide, the island offers you lots of choices for accommodation, from friendly family get-aways to honeymoon destinations or big spaces for groups of friends at reasonable prices, clean, comfortable and with spectacular views.

With a tropical climate, Norfolk Island offers a nice temperature all year round. There are so many activities on the island to keep you and your family interested. Just to name a few: bushwalking in the national park, with well signed posted tracks through lush palm tree forests with breathtaking coastal views; swimming and snorkeling at Emily Bay; exploring around the island on a Mini Moke; or simply just relaxing by the beach, listening to the wind and connecting with the spirit of Norfolk Island. So, if you want something different, avoid the distractions of the modern world or just get great value for your money then come to Norfolk Island!
