And don't worry – we're sure Santa will still find you, no matter where you are!

1. Germany

The Christmas festivities begin early in Germany! Enjoy the excuse to celebrate before friends and family back home, and immerse yourself in the wonderful activities on offer.

There are more than 2,500 Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets) across the country.

Over the festive period, German towns and cities play host to the famous Weihnachtsmärkte (Christmas markets), and today, there are more than 2,500 across the country. Nuremberg is one of the most iconic destinations to visit during the advent period, as it's believed to be the birthplace of Germany's Christmas markets.

Here, you can meander through endless stalls that are brimming with homemade gifts and local delicacies, all while sipping on a toasty mug of Glühwein (mulled wine).

There are a number of river cruises that stop off at Nuremberg and other destinations, including Cologne, Berlin and Munich.

If you want to experience a festive journey along the rivers of Germany, pop into our Canberra Travel agency today to secure your spot onboard!

2. Edinburgh

Be sure to pack your warmest winter clothes if a trip to Edinburgh is on your festive bucket list, as the Scottish city endures an average December temperature of five degrees Celsius – a step down from Canberra's 19 degrees Celsius! However, with a tartan scarf wrapped tightly around your neck and an itinerary of wonderful things to see and do, the last thing you'll be worried about is Jack Frost nipping at your nose!

This year, George Street is getting ready to transform into an ice sculpture spectacular for the Ice Adventure. Here, visitors can wander through an Arctic installation filled with breathtaking ice sculptures depicting some of Scotland's most iconic figures such as Mary Queen of Scots, Greyfriars Bobby and the Loch Ness Monster. Afterwards, head a little further down George Street for the Scottish Market. Pick up local wares, gifts and sweet treats before strapping on your skates and taking to the ice rink in St Andrew Square.

3. Finnish Lapland

Home to roaming reindeer, the aurora borealis (Northern Lights) and Santa Claus himself, it's no wonder that Finnish Lapland is the ultimate winter wonderland. One of the best modes of transport (and most memorable!) to take advantage of is husky sledding. Become a musher for the day as your team of dogs pull you through the snowy landscapes of Lapland. Alternatively, and just as fun, be sure to take a ride on a reindeer-pulled sleigh! Glide through fir forests before making a stop off at Santa Claus Village. Here, you can meet the big man himself and even ask for a sneaky selfie!

Here at Active Travel, we can book experiences like this, along with accommodation and transport, to help create a stress-free festive trip that you won't forget for years to come. Contact our Canberra travel agents today to find out more.
