What sort of consumer protection does Active Travel offer?
Active Travel, like most reputable travel agencies in Australia, operate with a client trust account, the first line of defence in consumer protection. No matter if you pay by credit card or direct deposit, cheque or layby, all funds are held in our Commonwealth Bank client trust account until we are ready to pay suppliers for the services.
Further to that, it is almost impossible to hold any more accreditation in the travel industry in Australia than we currently hold and as proud members of the Express Travel Group under the Independent Travel Group banner (essentially a buying group) which allows us to offer competitive rates.

ATAS Accreditation (ATAS)
ATAS is a national accreditation scheme, endorsing travel agents who have met strict financial and customer service criteria. As Australia’s best travel agencies, they can provide you with peace of mind when planning and purchasing your travel arrangements.
Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA)
The Australian Federation of Travel Agents (AFTA) is the peak industry body through which the business interests of travel agents are represented. Founded in 1957, AFTA seeks to enhance the professionalism of Travel Agents through:
the effective representation in industry and government affairs
facilitating changes to education and training curriculum
providing business support through professional advice and services, and
administration of the national travel accreditation scheme, ATAS
AFTA Chargeback Scheme (ACS)
AFTA Chargeback Scheme (ACS) is available to ATAS accredited travel agencies and provides protection against consumer credit card chargebacks which result from supplier insolvency.
The Scheme has been established as a member focused non-profit organisation and is the first scheme of its kind that offers protection against Forward Delivery Risk that traditionally has not been covered by insurance providers.

Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) is the world’s largest cruise industry trade association with representation in North and South America, Europe, Asia and Australasia.
The CLIA (Australasia) Cruise Accreditation Program has been established since 1996 and has become the industry benchmark for travel consultants wishing to develop extensive cruise industry knowledge and superior selling skills. The syllabus is continually evolving to meet the industry demands and is delivered and recognised as a highly professional program suitable for consultants of all levels of experience.
International Air Transport Association (IATA)
IATA accreditation, available for travel agents and cargo agents, simplifies the business relationship between agents and airlines, and gives airlines access to a worldwide network of reliably certified and recognized agents.
Full accreditation authorizes travel agents to sell international and/or domestic tickets on behalf of IATA member airlines. It also allows access to IATA’s Billing and Settlement Plan (BSP), an efficient interface for invoicing and payment between the agent, airlines and transport providers.
Independent Travel Group
Launched in July 2006, the Independent Travel Group (ITG) assists travel agencies by providing key tools and support to promote business growth and increase profits. ITG has a range of adaptable tools, depending on the agency’s needs, to work in partnership to achieve incentive targets and increase productivity.
ITG currently has a membership base exceeding 380 members nationally and is the fastest growing of ETG’s agency groups.
There is considerable potential and empowerment in being an ITG member. This is enabled through the ability to choose some or all of the services and benefits that the ETG national buying group provides.
ITG member’s retain their own branding and identity, are all experts in travel with many years’ experience in sending their valuable customers, who are usually based in their local communities, to fantastic journeys around the globe. So, this is not directly a consumer protection but there is a ‘safety in numbers’ aspect and a feeling of comfort from being able to pool resources with some of Australia’s most experienced travel agents.
